World of Warcraft on Linux Part 2: Ubuntu and The Burning Crusade.
By poika30 | December 22, 2007
With Ubuntu running, installing World of Warcraft and the Burning Crusade is a piece of cake.
From a terminal:
glxinfo | grep rendering
resulted in:
direct rendering: No <-- this needs to become a yes for WoW to run.
So Under system --> administration --> Software sources
--> Ubuntu software I checked all of the software sources.
I then went to system --> administration
--> Restricted drivers and enabled the Nvidia driver.
Then system --> administration --> update manager
No problems yet.
The next step was to install wine.
apt-get update
apt-get install wine
Then configuring wine.
winecfg
Of course I installed it as Windows XP.
Then I downloaded each of the huge files from Blizzard.
Original WoW - US Version Burning Crusade - US Version
I ran the install files and bam! they installed and ran.
I did edit the config.wtf file but it had no performance increase...
The game ran like a charm from the start.

World of Warcraft on Linux Part 1: Hardware.
By poika30 | December 15, 2007
Here is the list of hardware that I used to run World of Warcraft, Burning Crusade (WOW) on Ubuntu Linux 7.10 (desktop.)
While this system is low on the hardware it runs WOW quite nicely at 1024×768 with 40 fps.
1) 512 megs of Kingston ddr333 memory. Yep, it is less that the minimum requirement but it does the job.
2) Athlon 64 3200+
3) Nvidia Asus en6600 256m
4) 120 gig hard drive
5) MSI k8n NEO 4h
6) 400 W power supply Link World lpk2-30

Originally, I set up this website to discuss mythtv. While this was a good idea I felt that I really needed to become broadly based in topics. My intent now is to discuss anything from how to get a Nintendo Wii, its fun games, running World of Warcraft (WOW) on Ubuntu Linux, Hardware, software and other games. Just about anything gaming or computer related is where I want to take this.
